Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online - "The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and other government agencies have banded together to create a new booklet designed to help parents and teachers steer kids safely through the online and mobile-phone worlds.

The booklet was recently unveiled by FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski. The booklet tells parents and teachers what they need to know to talk to kids about issues such as cyber bullying, sexting, mobile phone safety, and protecting the family computer."

What’s App?

YouNow, Periscope, Meerjat, Twitch, how are you supposed to keep track of all the new Apps your child is using? How do you know what those Apps do? You’re busy, they’re busy, but you’d like to keep a little better handle on the Apps your kids are using. You may want to try something like: Common Sense Media. This is a comprehensive web site covering not only Apps, but books, movies, games, TV, music and websites. And of course, they have their own App as well, Kids' Media App which gets you Common Sense picks for TV, Movies, Books, Apps, etc. which you can customize for your student. Websites likeParenting offer great reviews on kid friendly Apps. Another site Best Apps for Kids includes apps installed on the grades 5-12 student iPads like: Kahn Academy, MyScript Calculator and Duolingo. Best Kid Apps offers an article on “How to Write a Family Media Agreement” and includes a sample (scroll down the page). This is just a sampling of the information available to you.  As you can see there are many sources to stay connected to the world of technology, filled with guides and information to explore and enjoy with your child.

YouNow, Periscope, Meerjat and Twitch are Apps for self-streaming. These services make slick use of technology, but of course there is no way of knowing if they will be viable long-term. Other Apps with similar functions have come around before, and really didn’t gain much traction. However, these Apps are worth knowing about, as one never knows what the next big thing will be or how it might affect your child.
